No drills, no shots: Treat cavities with a drop of a medicine

          • Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) makes dental visits less traumatic for children
          • Cavity-fighting medication treats children’s cavities without pain or injection
          • This topical treatment has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The very thought of drilling and filling may put patients off, but it is important to know that delaying necessary treatments can only make the problem significantly worse. Damaged teeth can’t heal themselves.

Children, in particular, are often quite anxious when they know they’re going to the dentist for a cavity treatment. Those who are too young to cooperate or sit through an entire treatment may even need to get their dental treatments under general anesthesia.

Here at the Dental Studio, we offer an alternative to the traditional drill and fill method of treating children’s cavities. Our Specialist Pediatric Dentist Dr. Enas Alkhadra offers a solution that is relatively faster, clinically-proven and pain-free.

          What is silver diamine fluoride?

Silver Diamine Fluoride or SDF is a liquid substance that we use to treat and stop cavities in children, including those with special needs. SDF helps kill the bacteria that break down tooth surfaces while also keeping them from spreading to the other healthy teeth. SDF helps the tooth rebuild the materials they’re made of, a process that we call remineralization.

How is silver diamine fluoride applied?

A very small amount of SDF is simply brushed onto the surface of the teeth with cavities. It’s a non-invasive and inexpensive in-office treatment that treats cavities without drilling, numbing or general anesthetic.

How silver diamine fluoride application benefit your child?

We want all children to have a great experience when they come and visit us at the clinic. SDF offers a simple, stress-free and pain-free alternative to young patients who would otherwise need injection, sedation or general anesthesia.

Who are the best candidates for silver diamine fluoride?

SDF is widely considered by dentists to be safe. The only common side effect is black staining around the area where it is applied. Children with silver allergies and those with severe cavities that reach the nerves are not good candidates for this therapy.

We’ve seen a lot of children who have benefitted from SDF treatment and we’re always thrilled to see them through their appointments without tears or trauma. Get in touch with us today and schedule an appointment for your child.
