The Dental Studio

Sensitivity is a side effect of all professional whitening systems, however it is temporary & not everyone experiences it.

For in house/office whitening where the blue light is used, sensitivity usually lasts upto 48 hours with the day of treatment being the most significant and then a gradual decrease over the next two days.

For home whitening where the trays are used, sensitivity can last the duration of the whitening. This could be two weeks if whitening is being carried out for the first time or a couple of days if a top up is taking place.

Sensitivity is controlled by using desensitising agents like sensodyne toothpaste and a fluoridated mouth wash at a different time to brushing. Sensodyne toothpaste can be applied as an ointment and left to soak into the tooth if it’s one or two specific teeth.

For moderate to severe sensitivity, painkillers are advised. Volfast works particularly well for tooth related pain. Patients are only recommended to use this providing they aren’t allergic and should always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
